The Joy of Reading

The Joy of Reading

The magic of books comes to life when we read aloud to children. No other instructional method can equal the power and joy of simply reading aloud a good book. When you read to a child, you: *Show that you enjoy reading books and find them magical. *Invite the child to have fun while listening to a story. *Invite the child to join in on parts of the book that showcase language such as a repeating refrain. *Expand a child's knowledge of the world and the realities they have not yet experienced. *Add to the words that the child already knows. *Build awareness of sounds in words. *Demonstrate smooth fluent reading. *Help the child notice how a reader turns pages and moves through the book. *Enable the child to notice relationships between the way words sound and the letters on the page. *Help the child discover how books are put together, with a beginning, a middle and an end. *Introduce the child to authors and artists who write and illustrate books. *Create interest in other books.
